Learning to incorporate Aboriginal histories and cultures on Country
K-6 Professional Learning Program – 10 hours TIPL
Starting in the magnificent Muogamarra Nature Reserve, Caring for Country is a professional learning program that provides an opportunity for teachers to learn about and experience the traditional practices of the local Aboriginal people and how this information can be incorporated into Geography and History inquiry-based frameworks for K-6 teachers.
Phase 1: One-day workshop at Muogamarra Nature Reserve:
Choose from either Friday 20 May 2022 (Term 2 day) OR Friday 19 August 2022 (Term 3 day)
Workshop participants will:
- engage in on-Country activities including an introduction to the local Aboriginal people, their culture and land practices (including bush tucker)
- visit important Aboriginal cultural engraving sites
- examine strategies for incorporating Aboriginal histories and cultures int inquiry-based frameworks for History and Geography
Phase 2: Learning Sequence Development
Development and implementation of a learning sequence at school during that term (2 or 3).
Phase 3: Sharing Session
A sharing video conference in Week 10 of that term (2 or 3)

Standards: Completing Caring for Country will contribute 10 hours of TIPL addressing 2.4.2, 3.2.2, 6.3.2, 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

7 NESA hours accredited PL
This course will introduce some of the amazing scientific innovations and world firsts created by Aboriginal cultures over the last 68 000 years and demonstrate how that knowledge represents an approach to science that is very different to our own.

3 NESA hours accredited PL
The Aboriginal Cultural Awareness (SDD) is a whole of school course that enables teachers and other members of the school staff to enhance their knowledge of local Aboriginal land practices and culture with regards to the Aboriginal Education Policy and to integrate this into their school culture and teaching and learning programs.
Date: These days are held on the SDD’s at the beginning of Term 2 and 3 each year. Other days can be negotiated with the Centre.
