Program
Stage 5 Wetland Scientist is a curriculum-aligned Science fieldwork excursion in Sydney that develops Working Scientifically skills through authentic investigations at Bobbin Head. Students formulate questions and hypotheses, collect and analyse reliable data, investigate estuary water quality, observe mangroves and mangrove crabs, and investigate the distribution of crabs or vegetation across the intertidal zone. Using scientific equipment to measure turbidity, pH and salinity, students experience the complete scientific investigation process while exploring Aboriginal knowledges of Country and sustainable practices.
By working in a real-world field environment, students experience the process of scientific investigation from question to evidence and develop the confidence, skills and scientific thinking required for further study in Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science and other senior science subjects.
The program provides valuable environmental education in Sydney and a strong foundation for senior science studies.
Special Note
This program requires a low tide day to enable the students to study the crabs. Please ask our staff when you are making a booking.

Pre-excursion work
Students are expected to complete pre-visit work to ensure they are able to complete the fieldwork.
Water quality fieldwork
Students will observe and infer the quality of the estuary water at Bobbin Head. They will then use scientific equipment to measure the water quality, including turbidity, pH and salinity to compare against their initial observations.
Observation and inference
Students will observe the two species of mangroves located in Bobbin Head to determine the differences and similarities. Through this process, they will learn about observation and inference.
Depending on the tide, students will observe and record the appearance and behaviour of the mangrove crabs and draw inferences about what they have observed. They will also use keys to determine the species that live on the mudflats.
Crab or vegetation distribution
Following the Working Scientifically process, they will observe and hypothesise to then plan and conduct an investigation for determining the abundance and distribution of crabs or vegetation across the intertidal zone.
Aboriginal knowledges of Country
Students will visit an Aboriginal cultural site to learn about the deep ecological understandings of the local Aboriginal Peoples, connecting scientific investigation with knowledge of Country.

| Adverse weather |
On days where the weather is unsuitable (see risk assessment), a Gibberagong staff member will contact the organising teacher to discuss alternative arrangements. Please check your bus company’s cancellation policy. |
| Medical notifications | Notify Gibberagong EEC by completing and returning the medical form before the excursion. This form will be sent out upon confirmation of booking. |
