Secondary Geography excursions

Gibberagong Environmental Education Centre offers curriculum-aligned secondary Geography excursions for Stage 4–6 students across Sydney. Through hands-on fieldwork in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and surrounding environments, students investigate landscapes, landforms, liveability, water, environmental change, sustainable biomes and Earth's natural systems. Programs develop geographical inquiry, mapping, data collection and analysis and fieldwork skills while supporting the NSW Geography syllabus.

Landscapes and landforms

This excursion supports the Stage 4 Geography – Landscapes and Landforms topic through authentic fieldwork in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Students investigate geomorphic processes, landscape values, human impacts and sustainable management using geographical inquiry and fieldwork techniques.

Place and liveability

This excursion supports the Stage 4 Geography – Place and Liveability topic through authentic urban fieldwork in Hornsby. Students investigate liveability by assessing access to services, environmental quality, community identity and economic activity using geographical inquiry and fieldwork techniques.

Water in the world

This excursion supports the Stage 4 Geography – Water in the World topic through authentic fieldwork at Bobbin Head and the Cowan Creek catchment. Students investigate hydrological processes, water quality, catchment management and Aboriginal perspectives on the cultural and environmental value of water.

Stage 5 Geography fieldwork excursions

Fieldwork investigating Environmental Change and Management, Fire Management, Sustainable Biomes and Changing Places using real-world environmental and urban case studies.

Environmental change and management: Wetlands

This excursion supports the Stage 5 Geography – Environmental Change and Management topic through authentic fieldwork at Bobbin Head. Students investigate mangrove ecosystems, water quality, biophysical processes, human impacts and environmental management using geographical inquiry and fieldwork techniques.

Environmental change and management: Fire

This excursion supports the Stage 5 Geography – Environmental Change and Management topic with a focus on fire management. Students investigate fire ecology, bushfire risk, environmental change and land management in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, incorporating Aboriginal Knowledges and geographical fieldwork.

Sustainable biomes

This excursion supports the Stage 5 Geography – Sustainable Biomes topic through authentic fieldwork at Bobbin Head. Students compare mangrove and dry sclerophyll forest biomes, investigate biophysical characteristics, human impacts and sustainable management, while developing geographical inquiry skills through hands-on environmental investigations.

Changing Places: Urban planning for sustainability

This excursion supports the Stage 5 Geography – Changing Places: Urban Planning for Sustainability topic through authentic urban fieldwork in Hornsby. Students investigate urban renewal, population growth, sustainability, liveability and community perspectives while developing geographical inquiry skills using real-world redevelopment plans.

Earth's natural systems

This excursion supports the Year 11 Geography – Earth's Natural Systems focus area through authentic geographical fieldwork at Bobbin Head, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Students investigate the interactions between atmospheric, hydrological, geomorphic and ecological systems in a mangrove forest, using specialised fieldwork equipment and geographical inquiry skills.
