Program
On a bush walk through Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park or Muogamarra Nature Reserve, students will explore the unique plants, animals, and Aboriginal history that make these places special. Using simple maps, they will identify and visit key features of the area to deepen their connection to the land. Through storytelling and hands-on activities like creating model habitats with natural materials and toy animals, students will develop an understanding of why these environments are important and how to care for them.
Learning intentions
Students are learning about:
- what places are like
- what makes a place special
- how we look after the places we live in
Key information
Learning activities
Special places story
Through story, students begin to understand what makes a place special. The activity encourages them to think about their own connections to local places and how to care for them.
Exploring places
Students will be introduced to a simple map of the area to learn how maps can be used as a way of exploring places. With map in hand, the students will identify and visit the different features of their place to explore and learn about why those places are special.
The old forest story and create a forest
Using a large story board, the students will be told a story about the importance of protecting natural bushland. The story is followed by the ‘create a forest’ activity where students work in groups and use natural materials and plastic animals to create a model habitat for Australian animals.
